Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Conventional food products and produce can contain residues of these toxic cocktails which, if consumed, have been linked to various life- threatening diseases. Conventional growers also use chemical fertilizers which de-nature the soil and tend to produce fruit and vegetables with less flavour and less vitamins and minerals than their organic equivalent. Organic standards also forbid any genetic modification or use of GM ingredients.

Global Warming.

Conventional farming depends on sprays that produce ‘greenhouse’ gases which contribute to global warming. It is also much more energy intensive, not only because of the production and distribution of the huge amounts of chemicals involved, but also because of the massive scale on which the farming is carried out – all causing more carbon emissions to warm up the planet.Organic Farming is more human scale and human labour intensive. Animals and Wildlife

Organic standards make provision for better welfare of livestock animals. They are generally better cared for, more healthy, and not subjected to routine hormone and anti-biotic injections as are their non-organic counterparts. Also organic farmers are required to care for the countryside. They need to maintain streams and hedgerows and plant trees. Far more birds, insects, wildflowers and other wildlife are able to thrive on and around organic farms than on the sterile, agro-industrial conventional ones.
